On 9 April 2026, H.E. Mr. OKUDA Naohisa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, attended the handover ceremony of a new school building at Eratap Primary School constructed under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects. The ceremony was attended by Hon. Simil Johnson, Minister of Education and Training, as well as officials from the Ministry, representatives of the school, and members of the local community.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Okuda referred to the important role the school plays in the community and expressed his expectation that the new facility will contribute to accommodating more students and improving the quality of education. He also emphasized that Japan is committed not only to infrastructure development but also to human resource development through the dispatch of JICA volunteers.
The Government of Japan provided approximately US$195,000 (VUV 23,400,000) for the implementation of this project at the request of the Ministry of Education and Training. The project included the construction of a two-classroom building, installation of a 6,000-liter rainwater tank, and provision of school furniture such as desks and chairs. The project is expected to improve a safe and comfortable learning environment and contributes to a further development of the school.
Furthermore, it is expected that this project, as a symbol of the friendship between Japan and Vanuatu, will contribute to a brighter future for the children of the community.
