On 23 March 2026, H.E. Mr. OKUDA Naohisa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, together with H.E. Mr. Peter Kemp, New Zealand High Commissioner, handed over a new water supply system to the Vao area in Malekula. The project was implemented under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, valued at US$192,271, equivalent to approximately VT 21,824,715, with additional support from the Government of New Zealand. The ceremony was attended by Hon. Rick Tchamako MAHE, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, and Mr. Erickson Sammy, Director of the Department of Water Resources, as well as representatives of the Malampa Provincial Government.
Prior to the ceremony, the delegation participated in a World Water Day event with the local community, reaffirming the importance of safe water.
Through this project, access to safe drinking water will be ensured, contributing to improved living and sanitation conditions for approximately eight hundred residents. Training on operation and maintenance was also provided to support the sustainable use of the system. The Government of Japan hopes that this project will benefit the community for many years to come and further strengthen the friendship between Japan and Vanuatu.
