The Government of Japan has provided Grant Assistance to fund the project “the Renovation of the Luganville Fire Station”, worth VUV17,981,930 (USD157,694), through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

H.E. Mr. OKUDA Naohisa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, signed the Grant Contract with Commander Astrophile MWELE, Vanuatu Mobile Force, to formalize this Japanese assistance on 3 October, 2024.
This project is aims to renovate the Luganville fire station and to provide new furniture.

Well-equipped fire stations can provide better fire rescue services in the event of emergency, and make the daily lives of the Ni-Vanuatu people less worrying. Fire stations provide services not only to extinguish fires, but also to save property and more importantly, precious lives. Based on this understanding, the Government of Japan decided to provide support for the rehabilitation of the fire station so that firefighters can respond effectively and efficiently to save lives and property in case of emergency.

In his remarks, Ambassador OKUDA mentioned “We hope that this assistance will improve the working environment of the firefighters and contribute to rapid deployment and effective firefighting operations in the event of emergencies and natural disasters, and that the people of Vanuatu will also derive maximum benefit from this project” .

He also mentioned " I'm also confident that this assistance will reaffirm our commitment and contribute to further strengthening the friendly relations between the governments and peoples of Japan and Vanuatu."

The Government of Japan has been committed not only to large-scale development projects such as infrastructure construction, but also to providing small-scale supports at the grass-roots level since 1996. The areas of assistance under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) are diverse including education, health and water supply etc. To date, the Embassy of Japan has formalized 141 projects, totaling over 12.6 million US dollars in total.
