The Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for "the project for the Construction of Lablutamata Primary School classroom building” under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP)(27 September 2024)

The Government of Japan has provided Grant Assistance to fund the project for the Construction of Lablutamata Primary School classroom building, worth VUV37,900,350 (USD327,857) through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
H.E. Mr. OKUDA Naohisa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, signed the Grant Contract with Honorable Mr. Samson Samsen, Minister of Education and Training, to formalize this Japanese assistance on 27 September 2024.
This project is to construct a new three-classroom school building with 60 desks and 120chairs for students, three sets of chairs and desks for teachers .
The area surrounding the school was one of the area most severely damaged by the Tropical Cyclone Lola in October 2023. Community prioritized constructing temporary classrooms utilizing local materials and tin roofs after severe damaged by the tropical cyclone, but now construction of a permanent building is an urgent need for the educational environment.
In his remarks, Ambassador OKUDA mentioned “the Government of Japan through the Embassy of Japan in Vanuatu has decided to provide support the school. The permanent building can also be used as an evacuation shelter for local residents around the school in the event of a disaster” .
He also mentioned " Japan hopes that this support will enable the school to improve the learning environment for the students. As a long-standing friend of Vanuatu, Japan is committed to providing continued assistance for Vanuatu's sustainable development, with the goal of enhancing the well-being of its people."
The Government of Japan is committed not only to large-scale development projects such as infrastructure construction, but also to providing small-scale supports at the grass-roots level since 1996. The assistance areas of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) are diverse including education, health and water supply etc. to date, the Embassy of Japan has formalized 140 projects, which amount to over 12.5 million US dollars in total. The areas covered by the GGP are very broad but approximately 60% of projects implemented here in Vanuatu are focused on educational projects.
