The Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for “the project for Improvement of Sanitary Environment in Natawa Center School and Tata Secondary School” under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP)(14 February 2024)
2024/2/14
The Government of Japan has provided Grant Assistance to fund the project for Improvement of Sanitary Environment in Natawa Center School and Tata Secondary School, worth VUV28,340,106 (USD244,944) through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
H.E. Mr. Okuda Naohisa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, signed the Grant Contract with Mrs. Wai Lin (Lynn) Chua, the Co-founder and Trustee of Butterfly Trust (NGO), on 14 February 2024, to formalize this Japanese assistance.
Natawa Primary School has 366 students from kindergarten to Year 8, but it has been suffering from a lack of toilets for many years, with only one pour flush toilet and one pit toilet for each gender. And what is worse, the school has access to water supply facilities only for one hour each morning and evening, making it difficult to construct flush toilets to improve the sanitary environment.
Tata Secondary School has 463 students from Year 7 to Year 10 and there are not enough toilets to meet the standard number. The school also has a water problem.
This project is to construct a new 10-room compost toilets to Natawa Primary School and 4-rooms for Tata Secondary School. It will also provide Theory & Principles, Practical Construction and Operations & Maintenance training. Composting toilets are more sustainable and more eco-friendly compared to pit toilets including ventilated improved pit (VIP) especially in area with less water. By training participants not only from the school but also community, the Embassy of Japan and Butterfly Trust hope that the construction and use of composting toilets will expand in the region by the local people themselves.
