The Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for “the project for the Construction of Baldwin Lonsdale Memorial School Science Laboratory” under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP)(22 March 2024)

The Government of Japan has provided Grant Assistance to fund for the project for the Construction of Baldwin Lonsdale Memorial School Science Laboratory, worth VUV44,489,500 (USD380,057) through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
H.E. Mr. OKUDA Naohisa, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Vanuatu, signed the Grant Contract with Honorable Mr. Anatole Hymak, Minister of Education and Training, to formalize this Japanese assistance on 7 March 2024.
The Baldwin Lonsdale Memorial School was established in 1960. It has now about 570 students and 34 teachers and staffs. The project will construct a science laboratory building at the only school that accept students up to Year13, provide 16 desks with sinks, 3 teacher’s desks , 69 chairs, 4 shelves and two-3,000-litre water tanks.
In Torba province, there are no schools equipped with a science laboratory, which has been a long time issue, especially for those students who pursue higher education in science. The construction of a science laboratory building is an urgent need for the educational environment for Torba province.
In his remarks, Ambassador OKUDA mentioned “ The Government of Japan through the Embassy of Japan in Vanuatu has decided to help the people of Torba overcome this long-standing challenge and we hope that this support will enable the school to improve the learning environment for the students.” .
He also conveyed his deepest condolences and sympathies to the people of Vanuatu who have faced as a result of the tropical cyclones in March and October, last year. He said " I have great respect for the resilience of the people of Vanuatu, during such difficult times. I hope that the recovery will progress as quickly as possible and that everyone will soon be able to return to their normal daily lives soon." and " The Government of Japan is ready to consider every possible assistance to help the recovery process", he added.
The Government of Japan is committed not only to large-scale development projects such as infrastructure construction, but also to providing small-scale supports at the grass-roots level since 1996. The assistance areas of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) are diverse including education, health and water supply etc. and to date, the Embassy of Japan has formalized 139 projects, which amount to over 12.1 million US dollars in total.
